Lambeth tenants walk out of ALMO conference

Last Saturday saw tenants and staff protest outside the Town Hall at the undemocratic nature of the new ALMO (Arms Length Management Organisation), called Lambeth Living, which now runs Lambeth Council’s housing stock.

The Tenants Council Chair received a standing ovation from tenants as she took over the opening of Lambeth Living's first conference and explained to tenants and leaseholders how Lambeth's ALMO had excluded Tenants Council from the running of the annual tenant’s conference.

Tenants and staff were also demonstrating against the massive rent increases that are being proposed, cut backs in services and wide spread redundancies.

Councillors and officers were stunned as Tenants Council members led an 80 strong walkout of the conference, supported by Lambeth Defend Council Housing and Unison.

Council leader Steve Reed was heckled throughout his opening speech and forced to leave the podium. Lambeth tenants sent a very strong message that, ALMO or no ALMO, we are independently organised and won't tolerate any attempts to undermine tenant' s organisation.

Well done the Tenants Council and UNISON staff.
